Ah, the tenacity of plants to bloom where they will, especially when unexpected!
We’re full into July now and summer isn’t holding back. Heat and humidity are lending themselves to bad jokes and even worse sunburns. While people aren’t enjoying the weather so much, the plants are! All around town, everything is blooming. Gardens are a riot of color, berries are ripe, and zucchini is starting to take over. I love seeing mullein, St. John’s Wort, and plantain growing along the sides of roads and cracks in the sidewalks.
The plants don’t know they are in the middle of a concrete jungle, and they don’t care. Enough sun and a little rain make them happy for the season.
I think it’s a good reminder for summer. It’s ok to be simple for a little while, to recognize and enjoy the basics. The heat can make us tired and irritable, and forces us to slow down in order to cool down. Find some shade and just breathe for a moment.
So, take that moment when you need to. Enjoy the sun and the shade. Use your sunglasses and sunscreen. Keep it simple. Keep it cool.
